BAKSIDESTEXT:
Kanuld är neandertalare. Hans pappa ägnar all sin tid åt att uppfinna onödiga manicker istället för att jaga mammut, och familjen är hungrig för jämnan. Dessutom bor de granne med en vulkan som kan få utbrott när som helst och till råga på allt verkar istiden närma sig! Det ser minst sagt mörkt ut. Hur ska familjen lyckas hålla samman? Kanuld och hans bästis Onk ger sig sjutton på att fixa biffen.
OMDÖME:
Jag ville verkligen gilla den här boken, men den var inte min grej helt enkelt. Jag är rädd att min slutsats är att jag inte kan rekommendera Kanuld, jag ska förklara varför:
- Mitt största problem med Kanuld är att berättelsen inte är konsekvent. Om Kanuld's familj är så hungrig, varför tar de hand om husdjur utan några som helst planer på att äta dem? Varför tjafsar mamman alltid om att pappan måste ut och jaga för att de är så hungriga, men sedan säger hon till sonen att hon inte vill "gnaga på trista rötter" och att sallad inte är mat men bara en "statussymbol". Detta är absurt, men inte på ett charmigt barnboklig sätt, utan på ett stötande sätt.
- Det finns också problem med berättelsens handling: den kändes som en samling av händelser snarare än en väl genomtänkt story. T.ex. händelserna i de första kapitlen har ingen som helst effekt på den senare delen av berättelsen. Och det finns passager i boken (som på sida 82) som inte bara är en massa ord, utan också nonsens. Var hans redaktör på semester? I just den kapitlen kunde 3 sidor ha skrotats utan att något hände med berättelsen i sig.
- Karaktärerna är inte heller något att gilla, det är jävligt svårt att känna sympati för Kanulds föräldrar. De är hänsynslösa, själviska och helt utan någon slags förälderinstinkt. Pappan är en värdelös typ (hur kan han spendera sin tid med sina dumma uppfinningar när hans son går hungrig?) och mamman är opportunistisk (hon kan inte kallas en för en "guldgrävare", men hon är iaf en "köttgrävare" eftersom hon lämnar sin man för den otrevlige Bronko för att hon vill äta kött och är för bortskämd för att äta grönsaker).
- Slutligen, är boken budskap inte tydlig. Vilka värden är det som författaren försöker få barn som läser Kanuld att förstå?
Men det kanske är bara jag som är för gammal för att uppskatta boken, så jag min systerdotter får ha sista ordet i om den här boken är något att ha...
SUMMARY:
Kanuld is a Neanderthal. His father devotes all of his time toward inventing unnecessary gadgets instead of hunting mammoth, and the family is hungry all the time. Moreover, they live next door to a volcano that can erupt at any time and to top it all it seems that a new ice age is approaching! How will the family manage to stay together? Kanuld and his best friend Onk will have to go to great lenghts to bring home the bacon.
REVIEW:
I really wanted to like this book, but, really, it wasn't my thing. I'm afraid I've come to the conclution that I wouldn't recomment it, and here is why:
- my biggest problem with Kanuld is that it isn't consistent. If kanduld's family is so hungry, why do they always keep taking in pets? why is the mom always bitching about the dad having to go hunting because they're hungry then she says turns around tells the son that she doesn't want to "gnaw on dull roots" and that salad is only a "status symbol". This is absurd, and not in a charming kid's books' kind of way, but in an offensive way.
- there is also a problem with the story's plot: it felt like a collection of events rather than a well thought out plot, the events in the first couple of chapters have no effect of the later part of of the story. And there are passages, like in page 82 that are not only just fillers, but complete utter nonsense. Where was the editor? 3 pages would have been scrapped from that particular chapter without even denting the plot.
- the characters aren't very likeable and it's hard to feel sympathetic towards Kanulds parents, who are downright thoughtless and selfish with no instinct for child welfare. The dad is a good for nothing bum (how can he spend all his time with his stupid inventions when his child is hungry?) and the mom is opportunistic (she can't be called a gold digger, but she certainly is a meat digger because she leaves her husband for a snobby hunter because she's too spoiled to eat veggies).
- finally, the book's theme is unclear. What values is the story trying to make kids understand?
But hell, maybe I'm too old to appreciate the book, so I'll forward it to a kid as an experiment...we'll see what my niece's two cents on it are.
